Lyric Scoring Standard vs. academic prosody analysis
Academic prosody analysis is the gold standard for studying poetry's metric and phonological structure. The Lyric Scoring Standard borrows from it for the Prosody metric (M1) — but ships nine other dimensions academic prosody doesn't measure because pop / country / hip-hop lyrics are not literary poetry.
What each measures
Academic prosody analysis
Stress patterns, foot types (iambic, trochaic, anapestic), enjambment, caesura, sound symbolism, end-rhyme + internal-rhyme patterns. Built for studying canonical poetry; the corpus is sonnets, ballads, blank verse, free verse.
Lyric Scoring Standard
Prosody (M1) covers stress + meter, but contributes only 8.3% to the composite (one of 12 metrics, weighted under Craft 25%). The other 91.7% measures things academic prosody doesn't: Specificity, Imagery Originality, Emotional Truth, Voice & POV Integrity, Transcendence, Arc, Memorability, Genre Fit, Wholeness.
Where the rubric extends
Academic prosody analysis
Academic prosody is descriptive. It tells you whether a line scans as iambic pentameter; it does not tell you whether the line is generic, whether the imagery is original, or whether the song earns its arc.
Lyric Scoring Standard
The rubric is evaluative AND descriptive. Specificity asks 'does this line have a named anchor?' Imagery Originality asks 'have I seen this image in 100+ other songs?' Voice asks 'is the narrator a real person with a stance?' These questions don't fit academic prosody's frame.
Where they overlap
Academic prosody analysis
M1 (Prosody) reuses the academic toolkit. A line that fails academic scansion will fail Prosody. Academic prosody on the lyric "I went down to the crossroads" will identify it as iambic / pyrrhic mixed. Our Prosody metric agrees.
Lyric Scoring Standard
Same toolkit, narrower question. We don't grade the lyric's prosody at the granularity a Berklee thesis would. We grade enough to catch stress-cluster failures and meter that fights the genre's expected pulse.
Reproducibility
Academic prosody analysis
Academic prosody analysis is reproducible by other scholars working from the same definitions, but not formally signed. Two scholars can disagree on whether a line is anapestic or amphibrachic; the disagreement is part of the method.
Lyric Scoring Standard
Every score response carries an ed25519-signed seal: rubricVersion + model id + temperature + buildSha + build number. Two implementations of the rubric against the same lyric + seed produce the same score. Disagreements with prior scholarship are out of scope — we measure pop lyric craft, not cantos.
Verdict
Academic prosody analysis is the right tool for studying canonical poetry. The Lyric Scoring Standard is the right tool for evaluating contemporary song lyrics. They share Prosody (M1) and disagree on nothing — they just answer different questions. Citation patterns are perpendicular, not competitive.
