How to Write Jazz Standard Lyrics (32-Bar AABA, Economy, the Turn)

A jazz standard is not an old pop song in a suit. The form — 32 bars, AABA, often with a "turn" in the bridge — is a compression technology. The best standards say more in 32 bars than most modern songs say in four minutes. The craft is in what gets left out.

The 32-bar AABA is the container

Two 8-bar A sections (the main melody), one 8-bar B section (the bridge/release), one more 8-bar A (the return). Total: 32 bars. Every jazz standard from "Autumn Leaves" to "All The Things You Are" fits this shape or a close variant. The verses in each A need to be SHORT — 4-6 lines each. The lyric has to finish in that space or it breaks the form.

Economy is the whole genre

"Ev'ry time we say goodbye, I die a little." Six words. The rest of the lyric unfolds that line. Jazz standards work because the central emotional claim fits in a breath, and the verses explore it without restating it. Cut every word that doesn't earn its space. A jazz lyric is a haiku with a chord chart.

The bridge turns the song

In AABA form the B section is the emotional pivot. The A sections establish; the bridge reveals — a new perspective, a contradiction, a question the earlier verses hadn't asked. "I've Got You Under My Skin" bridges from obsession into self-recognition ("the warning voice that comes in the night"). Without the bridge turn, you're writing a waltz, not a standard.

Singable vowels + natural stress

Standards were written for singers who held notes for four beats at a time. End phrases on open vowels (ah, oh, ee) that a vocalist can live inside. Match syllabic stress to the melody: if the note is held long, the syllable better carry meaning. A filler word on a whole-note destroys the line.

Metaphor system stays coherent

The weather, the seasons, the city at night, the distance between two people — pick ONE image system and sustain it through all 32 bars. Standards that mix metaphors ("you're the sunshine of my storm cloud... that sailed into harbor") collapse under the form's tightness. A 4-minute indie folk song can survive a mixed metaphor. 32 bars cannot.
