The Sunshine Detectives
Seven-year-old Pip discovers the rainbow has vanished from the sky, and must convince her whole neighbourhood to look up together before the rainbow fades from the world forever.

Chapter 01song
Sunshine Detectives (Theme Song)
Verse 1
Pip snatches up a bottle cap and pins it to her chest
She taps it twice and squares her shoulders, clearly self-impressed
She drags me off the porch steps toward the oak tree in the yard
Says, "Wren, I've got a job for us" — then flashes her business card
Pre-Chorus
We notice what the hurrying-up people
walk straight past without a glance
a puddle's just a tiny dropped sky
and even the slow-blooming mornings get a chance
Chorus
Detectives of wonderful things
We fill the book with everything that everybody skips
Eyes on every tiny, impossible, small thing
Detectives of wonderful things — we notice it all
Verse 2
Wren squints and flips an imaginary notepad, taps her chin
Says, "Do we have a file? Do we have a form to fill?"
Pip shakes on it the way that actual judges do, approximately
Then freezes — because the oak tree has gone silent, officially
Bridge
We, the detectives of wonderful things,
do hereby solemnly swear —
to look at what gets walked past,
to notice what gets missed,
to write it in the book
we haven't bought yet
but definitely will —
signed, Pip, chief of noticing —
and Wren, deputy of... also noticing.
Chorus
Detectives of wonderful things
We fill the book with everything that everybody skips
Eyes on every wonderful, impossible small thing
Detectives of wonderful things — we notice it all
Outro
Four rising glockenspiel notes, bright and complete.
Chapter 02song
Where Did the Rainbow Go?
Verse 1
I charge across the grass and skid — look up
Scramble to both feet and squint against the sun
Sprint three steps, spin hard, fling both arms wide —
Red and orange, yellow, green, just blue
Just blue
Chorus
Where did the rainbow go?
It was right here, I know, I know
All those colors — where'd they go?
Now there's nothing there to show
Where did the rainbow go?
Does it know we're missing it?
We've been looking up all morning
And we didn't see it go
Verse 2
It's lived in that oak tree since the snow first fell
Pip slaps both palms against the bark and climbs
Leaps to grab a branch, kicks feet, swings high —
Just blue
Just blue
Wren! Come run — come look at this — come look!
Chorus
Where did the rainbow go?
It was right here, I know, I know
All those colors — where'd they go?
Now there's nothing there to show
Where did the rainbow go?
Does it know we're missing it?
We've been looking up all morning
And we didn't see it go
Final Chorus
Where did the rainbow go?
It was right here, I know, I know
All those colors — we'll find them
Maybe we should look below
Where did the rainbow go?
Maybe it knows that we're missing it
So we look up — we look up —
Wren and I — we're gonna find it
We won't let the rainbow go
We'll find the rainbow
Chapter 03song
Follow the Colour Drops
There's one.
Right there on the path.
Verse 1
A circle of red on the stepping stone
Bright as a strawberry, small as a coin
The garden breathes quiet
The oak tree holds its arms out wide
And the trail goes on
And the trail goes on
Chorus
Follow the colour down
Follow the colour down
Across the grass, across the ground
It came from very high
And it has to be found
Follow the colour down
Verse 2
A pool of blue beside the garden wall
Blue that belongs up high
Not here on the ground
The oak tree doesn't move
It knows
And the trail goes on
Chorus
Follow the colour down
Follow the colour down
Across the grass, across the ground
It came from very high
And it has to be found
Follow the colour down
Verse 3
A patch of yellow by the big roots
Yellow like it fell from somewhere far above
Pip reaches for it —
but Wren presses one hand against her pocket.
Says nothing.
The trail goes on.
Bridge
Red.
Blue.
Yellow and green.
Gold and orange.
One, two, three, four, five, six —
Oh.
Final Chorus
Follow the colour down
Follow the colour down
Across the grass, across the ground
It came from very high
And we have to find it now
Follow the colour down
Outro
There are more.
There are so many more.
Chapter 04song
Tangled in the Tree
Verse 1
We ran until the yard ran out of yard
Then stopped
The oak tree stood there, winter-bare, enormous
And the colours —
all of them, red and green and violet —
sewn into every branch
like they'd always been there
Only sad
Refrain
All knotted up
All knotted up
In the branches of the tree
All knotted up
Verse 2
I thought finding the thing was the same as fixing it
I was wrong
The colours were braided too deep for pulling
Two notes on the glockenspiel
then stillness
(there used to be four)
I caught it in the oak
The rainbow had been dropping pieces of itself
the whole winter
hoping someone would follow
Refrain
All knotted up
All knotted up
Since the first cold day
All knotted up
Bridge
Dear branches —
did you mean to keep it?
Or did it just fall in
and neither of you
knew how to ask for —
Verse 3
That was when we understood
The drops weren't clues
They were falling
The rainbow was calling
and we were the ones
who finally —
Refrain
All knotted up
All knotted up
And we don't know yet
how to get it
All unknotted

Rainbows Need Noticing
Verse 1
I've been up in the oak since the very first snow,
red and violet and gold, and nowhere to go.
The hurrying-up people go by in the cold —
coat collars up, and their eyes on their toes.
Pre-Chorus
Just look up.
Just look up.
I'm right where I've always been — just look up.
Verse 2
The postman goes past with his bag full of mail.
The dogs chase their afternoons, tail over tail.
I glow my whole hardest — I shine till it aches —
and nobody notices. Nobody wakes.
Pre-Chorus
Just look up.
Just look up.
It doesn't take much — you just have to look up.
Bridge
It isn't that they're unkind.
It's only that nobody told them:
the wonderful things don't shout.
They wait in a tree.
They shine and they wait
and they hope you're the one
who remembers to —
Chorus
Look up.
Look up.
Somebody's shining and hoping you'll see.
Look up.
It was Pip who remembered.
It was Pip and it was Wren.
Two kids with a bottle-cap badge
looked up —
and found me again.
Outro
So I'll shine.
And I'll wait.
And I'll hope you look up.
Chapter 06testimony
I Know What Lonely Feels Like
The grass was cold. I sat.
Wren sat too. Not talking.
The rainbow snagged in the oak.
There. Not shining. Caught.
I said: I know how that feels.
Not loud. Quiet.
Last winter, the sledding hill.
Nobody called my name.
The colour hung there.
Nobody stopped.
Wren said: me too.
Just that. Me too.
Some mornings I'm the fog.
Here. Nobody looks.
Then Wren found my sleeve.
Not my hand. My sleeve.
We sat. The oak sat.
The rainbow moved. One thread of violet.
It moved when both of us looked.
I think that was enough.
Maybe.
Chapter 07song
The Looking-Up Plan
Verse 1
Pip scribbles down the neighbours alphabetical and neat
She waves the crumpled paper like a general in the street
It moved when we both looked — so it needs more than two,
the whole street looking up at once — that's the trick, that's the clue
Pip taps the list and bounces on her heels and grabs my hand
We've got a plan and we have got to make it stick
Pre-Chorus
But the first door is very far away
And my chest is going bump bump bump
Pip's already knocking. I'm still on the step.
My feet won't — my feet won't — my feet won't come
Chorus
Everybody look up
Look up at the sky with us
We've got a rainbow waiting in a tree
Everybody look up
It only works if all of us
Look up together — one, two, three
Verse 2
Pip says, Wren. We promised. Remember the badge.
I signed it too — deputy of also noticing.
So I lift my hand. It's shaking. I knock — knock knock —
and the door swings wide before my heart can stop
Bridge
Okay so here's the plan —
Step one: Mrs. Adeyemi — she's already on her lawn
Step two: Mr. Chen is coming, General too — the cat
Step three: the twins are in position — yes, both twins
Step four: Mr. Kowalski puts the stamps away, yes all of them
Step five: the postman blows his whistle — when the sun hits gold
Step six: everybody stands exactly where they're standing
Step seven: we all look up
That's it. That's the whole plan.
Chorus
Everybody look up
Look up at the sky with us
We've got a rainbow waiting in a tree
Everybody look up
It only works if all of us
Look up together — one, two, three
Outro
I knocked.
I actually knocked.
And the door opened.
And I didn't run.
Chapter 08song
Everybody Look Up!
Verse 1
My knuckles hit the next door — knock knock knock
Mrs. Adeyemi steps out and stops dead on the block
"A rainbow's twisted, sad, it can't get free —
I need every eye — I need you and me"
She leaves the flamingo, she calls to the street
Already looking up, already on her feet
Pre-Chorus
And one becomes two becomes ten on the street
Gold afternoon on every upturned face
Chorus
Everybody look up now
The dogs, the grandmas, the babies — out
The postman drops his bag right here
The oak tree blazing, gold and clear
Everybody — look — up — now
Verse 2
Wren sprints to the postman three doors down
She waves her arms and spins him around
Mr. Kowalski's out — he's been waiting for this,
he says at last, something good to do
The twins come running in matching yellow wellies
Tiny Remy kicks her heels and squeals high
Her fat gold fist punches straight at the sky
Gran leaps off the step, she shouts and grins
The whole street stomps and claps and the noise begins
Pre-Chorus
And one becomes two becomes ten becomes more
Gold on the pavement, gold on every door
Chorus
Everybody look up now
Dogs and grandmas, babies shout
The postman drops his bag right here
The oak tree blazing, gold and clear
Everybody — look — up — now
Chorus — the whole street answers back
WE'RE looking up now! (look up now!)
Every window, every door — (look up now!)
The whole street's got its head tipped back —
the oak tree blazing, gold and black —
Everybody — look — UP — now
Outro
And the rainbow felt it —
every single pair of eyes,
something in the branches stretching —
Footsteps on the pavement. One dog bark. Then — nothing. The rainbow lifts.
Chapter 09song
There It Is
Verse 1
The whole street stood beneath the oak
with every face turned toward the light.
The branches loosened one by one,
but something still was not quite right.
The yellow found the waiting gold,
the red climbed where the red belonged,
but one small space stayed dark and still.
I knew what had been missing all along.
Verse 2
The very first drop fell in the snow
before Pip knew there was a trail.
I found it shining by the roots,
small as a coin and cold and pale.
I slipped it deep inside my pocket.
I carried it through winter there.
I told myself I kept it safe,
but maybe I was scared to share.
Pre-Chorus
I keep my words the way I kept it —
close, where nobody can take them.
Pip stood beside me, hands held open.
She didn’t reach.
She let me choose.
Bridge
Before the arc was ever an arc,
before the red found orange, found gold,
there was a girl beneath an oak tree
opening what she had kept closed.
I lifted my hand into the light.
The colour trembled on my skin.
Then I let go.
And the sky received it
like it had been asking all along.
Verse 3
The red ran up to meet the red,
the blue climbed home into the blue,
the green and gold and violet threads
all remembered what to do.
The branches opened.
The whole sky widened.
Every colour found its part.
I opened my hand.
That was the bravest thing —
not the finding.
The letting go.
Final Chorus
There it is —
brighter than before,
brighter than the morning
when the world was new.
There it is —
every colour lifting,
soaring, pouring,
breaking through.
There it is —
the thing we almost lost,
the thing that waited
for someone to know.
There it is.
There it is.
I opened my hand
and let it go.
Chapter 10song
We'll Always Look Up (Reprise & Promise)
Verse 1
I run outside and the sky is singing
The oak tree shakes its branches swinging wide
I grab Wren's hand and we spin in the grass
We shout at the rainbow — we saw you at last
Verse 2
It stretches so wide I jump up trying to touch it all
It catches the light — shimmers — and it wants to play
I wave my arms and the grandma next door laughs at her gate
The postman drops his letters — spins around — too late
Pre-Chorus
Nobody noticed me all winter
I won't let that happen to you
So I look up and say it out loud to the whole wide sky
Chorus
Every single day
We'll look up and find you
Every single day
Wren and me, I promise
Every single day
The sky keeps its colours for everyone who looks
Every single day
Bridge
Ten years from now I stand in this same yard
Taller and older but I tilt my head back this hard
I shout to the sky — I know what to do
Look up, find the colours, think of Wren, think of you
Pip and Wren and the rainbow — we'll always say
Every single day
Five notes now — the rainbow grew
Every single day
Coda
Look up. Look up. Look up. Look — there.
The devoted layerThe architecture beneath the songs — open it if you want to see the story the machine kept faith with.
The argument it proves
Loneliness dissolves the moment someone chooses to pay attention — and one person noticing is always enough to start.
The turn
Pip reaches the rainbow in the oak tree expecting to untangle it herself (Track 4), but discovers the rainbow is not broken — it is heartbroken. It doesn't need fixing; it needs to be seen. Everything Pip thought was a physical puzzle turns out to be an emotional one.
Planted, then paid off
- Song 1 → 5✓ verified
In Track 1, Pip's badge-pledge includes the line 'we notice what others walk past'. → In Track 5, the rainbow reveals it has been invisible all winter because everyone walked past without looking up — the pledge is literally what the whole quest is about. - Song 3 → 9✓ verified
In Track 3, Wren picks up one colour drop and puts it in her pocket 'for safekeeping'. → In Track 9, Wren holds the colour drop up to the sky and it is the first piece to fly back and reconnect — her small act of keeping it safe matters enormously.
Images that evolve
- The Four-Note Rainbow Motif bright and complete — four rising glockenspiel notes, confident (song 1) → fragmented — only two notes, trailing off, slightly out of tune (song 4) → fully restored and harmonised — all four notes plus a fifth resolving note added (song 10)
- Looking Up Pip looks up and finds only empty sky — the act of noticing finds nothing (song 2) → The rainbow explains that no one has looked up all winter — looking is an act of love (song 5) → The whole neighbourhood looks up together — a collective, joyful act (song 8)
- The Colour Drops scattered on the ground — a trail of fallen colour, mysterious and pretty (song 3) → tangled in branches — colour as trapped, sad, unable to rise (song 4) → rising back into the sky — the drops lift and reassemble into the full arc (song 9)
The cast
- Pip — Wren's best friend; the one who first spots the rainbow is missing
- Wren — Pip's best friend; the planner and the one who talks to the rainbow first
- The Rainbow — Belongs to everyone in the neighbourhood; has been overlooked all winter
- The Neighbourhood Chorus — Pip and Wren's wider world; strangers who become a team
